For a limited number of Virginia high school and community college students interested in advancedtechnologies and attending VCU programs, registration is now open for the first activity from the VirginiaCommonwealth University (VCU), Convergence Lab Initiative (CLI) Student Engagement Program. Thiscertificate-bearing, professional seminar and learning experience will be held on the campus of VirginiaCommonwealth University and is hosted by senior faculty members. Funded by a grant from the Department ofDefense, the VCU College of Engineering Convergence Lab Initiative is a cross-disciplinary institute bringingtogether scientists, engineers, and technicians to solve pressing defense challenges for the United States.CTEWorkforce, a workforce technology company, has partnered with the VCU CLI to provide the CLI StudentEngagement Program.
“This program has been developed to facilitate work across subject areas by teaching students how to breakdown industry silos,” said Nibir K. Dhar, Ph.D., electrical and computer engineering professor and CLI programlead. “What we found in CTEWorkforce was the perfect partner to help us deliver on this goal via use of theirtechnology, processes, and past successes in the area of experiential learning.”
Program Overview
In the half-day session (including lunch provided by VCU)students will tour the CLI Lab, and be able to interact withmultiple professors and staff who will be presentinginformation sessions on the following advanced technologyareas including:
- Electro-Optic & Infrared
- Radio Frequency and Communication
- Artificial Intelligence and Smart City
Facilitated interactions with current VCU students will alsoprovide valuable insight into the college experience. At theend of the CLI Student Engagement Program, students willbe asked to provide feedback outlining how what has beenlearned can be applied to solve a selected real-worldproblem. In addition to activity and program certificates, thefirst fifty accepted students will receive a $50 award. Fifteen selected students will also earn an opportunity toparticipate in a broader program and will receive a $500 honorarium, once completed.
